Like any activity, practice is key to becoming a successful ballet dancer. However, finding time to practice at the dance studio can be tricky between school, family obligations, and other hobbies. Investing in a barre is a great way to build good practice habits at home. The following guide explores several factors to consider when purchasing a ballet barre.

How to Select a Ballet Barre

1. Material

ballet

Barres are generally made with one of three materials: wood, metal, or plastic. Wood barres are the most popular choice since they're attractive, lightweight, and comfortable to use. Dancers like metal since it's very sturdy and long-lasting, and plastic is also a good option since it's very lightweight and affordable. Speak with your child about which material they prefer and compare various options to find the best fit.

2. Configuration

Dancers can choose a single or a double barre. Single barres consist of a horizontal pole attached to either the wall or supported by two vertical bars, while a double barre has two horizontal poles supported the same way single barres are. Single barres cost a little less than double ones; however, double barres are more versatile since each bar is at a different height. This is convenient if you have different-sized dancers using the same equipment. If you choose a single barre and have more than one child practicing at home, you'll need to adjust the height for each child.

3. Fixed vs. Portable

You'll also need to decide if you want a fixed barre or a portable one. Fixed equipment is sturdier, which means your dancer won't have to worry as much about weight or support as they practice. However, fixed barres require drilling holes into the wall for installation, which might not be ideal unless you have a dedicated practice room in your home. Portable options are less sturdy, but they are easier to transport and adjust as your child grows. You can also easily store portable barres when they're not in use.
