Whether you're a resident on Kauai or you're visiting the island on vacation, maintaining your relationship with God and practicing your faith is an ongoing practice. St. Catherine of Alexandria Parish is a Catholic church with three locations in Kapaa, HI. If you're interested in attending a church service, here's some information on each location.

3 Catholic Churches in Kapaa

1. St. Catherine

St. Catherine Church is considered the primary place of worship for this parish. Located in Kealia on the corner of Kawaihau Road and Hauaala Road, the site was originally blessed by Bishop Keochemann on September 2, 1887, just six years before the United States-backed overthrow of the Hawaiian Kingdom. With a growing congregation and demand for worship services, a new church was built and completed in 1958. The church features artwork from three of Hawaii's renowned artists, Jean Charlot, Juliette May Fraser, and Tseng Yo Ho. Mass is held on Saturday at 5:00pm, Sunday at 7:30am, 9:30am, and 5:00pm. Daily church services take place at 7:00am, and holiday services start at 8:00am.

2. St. Sylvester

Fr. Hubert Sylvester Stappers arrived in Kilauea in 1871 as the first resident priest. He built a church and rectory dedicated to his patron, St. Sylvester. The original church existed until 1906 and was then moved to the eastbank of the Kilauea river in a land swap with the Kilauea Sugar Company. The church was remodeled and restored to accommodate the growing number of parishioners until 1956, when it was deemed beyond repair. The current St. Sylvester Church, located at 2390 Kolo Road, can seat 350 people and is octagonal-shaped and built from lava rock, redwood, and cedar. Mass takes place on Saturday at 5:00pm, Sunday at 7:00am, and Wednesday at 5:30pm.

3. St. William

St. William Church was built in 1956 under the direction of Fr. John McDonald to serve the growing population of Catholics in Hanalei. With a tremendous amount of volunteer work by parishioners, the building was completed for $20,000 and officially blessed by Bishop James J. Sweeney on February 19, 1956. The building is designed to resemble the long houses of Polynesia and is located on the corner of Kuhio Highway and Malolo Road. Mass takes place on Sunday at 9:00am.
