People who enjoy reading tarot cards understand the allure of the hobby. For those who are new to it, however, it may seem a bit daunting. Many myths circulate about the practice, but putting the rumors to rest will help you see that there's no reason to be intimidated. Here’s what anyone who’s new to tarot cards should know.

Dispelling Common Tarot Card Myths

1. You Must Be a Psychic to Use Them

While there are some individuals who may have psychic gifts, you don’t have to be one of them to practice tarot readings. Rather, it’s a skill anyone can develop. As with any skill, the more you practice reading the cards, the more you’ll get from the experience.

Tarot is a language that uses symbolism and associations. While it may feel intimidating for beginners, it can be learned through routine study. Although having a strong intuition can help as you interpret cards, this can also be honed through ongoing practice.

2. They’re Only Used to Tell the Future

Perhaps the most common myth about these card readings is that they only tell you what’s to come. While a psychic may use the cards to support them in their visions, most individuals use them to gain clarity about their current circumstances.

For example, readings may help uncover an underlying desire you haven’t yet tapped into, or a potential consequence of a specific behavior or action. In other words, using your deck to learn more about your present situation could help you make more informed decisions for the future.

3. There Are Some “Bad” Cards

The presumption that there are evil cards which can spell imminent doom can understandably keep people away from practicing tarot. Again, however, the cards use symbols and associations to reveal truths. For example, the Death card shouldn’t be interpreted as a physical death, but rather the end of a chapter. In many cases, such closure also brings new opportunities with it.

Similarly, reversed cards don’t necessarily indicate negative omens, either. Instead, they can suggest an area in your life that may simply require more attention. A reversed strength card could indicate that you’ll need to channel inner strength to overcome a challenge, for example.
