Barre classes have become increasingly popular in recent years for people who want to build muscle strength and flexibility. Inspired by ballet, the workouts involve controlled movements that focus on balance and using your own bodyweight for resistance. Barre is known for being intense yet effective and enjoyable, but if you have never been to a class before, you may be apprehensive about what to expect. Whether you're starting a new exercise regimen or you already work out regularly, the following tips can help you get the most from your first time in the barre studio.

How to Prepare for Your First Barre Class

1. Dress Comfortably

Barre classes involve both standing and floor exercises, and you should dress for comfort and ease of movement. Yoga pants or leggings, a breathable tank top or T-shirt, and a low- to medium-impact sports bra will fit the bill. Grippy socks with non-slip soles are also helpful, as they help you safely maintain your position. Otherwise, plan to go barefoot in class.

2. Arrive Early

It's a good idea to arrive at least 15 minutes early for your barre class so you have time to complete paperwork and introduce yourself to the instructor. Letting the instructor know that it is your first class, and discussing any limitations you might have (like old injuries, pregnancy, or other issues) allows them to recommend modifications throughout the class to keep you safe.

3. Expect a Learning Curve

The exercises you'll do during a barre class can look deceptively simple. However, to get the most from them, maintaining proper form is critical, and your instructor will recommend corrections and adjustments that might not come as easily as you expect. They might even be a bit challenging or uncomfortable at first. This is normal. Ask for help if you need it, and understand that it might take several classes to understand all of the terminology and correct positions.

4. Prepare to Be Sore

Even people who are in good shape and work out regularly are often sore after their first barre class. The movements and exercises in barre use your muscles in ways they may not be used to and can cause fatigue and soreness. Soreness is especially common if you haven't worked out in a while. The more classes you attend, the less sore you'll be, so keep at it. Drinking plenty of water, stretching, and using a foam roller in between classes can help reduce discomfort.
