Spring always feels far away when snow is on the ground and the morning air is biting cold. Yet, now that it's here, you'll want to ensure your yard is in the best condition to encourage healthy growth. The following guide outlines several actionable lawn care steps to take.

Lawn Care Tips to Get Ready for Spring

1. Rake the Yard

Early spring raking is not about clearing away leaves since homeowners should do that before the snow hits the ground during the fall. Instead, the objective is to remove any thatch. Breaking up any remaining turf grass from the previous season makes room for new growth.

Don't overdo the raking, as early spring grass is tender. Use a leaf rake rather than a rigid metal rake to complete this task since it will be more gentle on the new grass.

2. Aerate the Lawn

A lawn that experiences a lot of foot traffic can become compacted. This makes it harder for desirable plants to grow, leading to moss spreading on top of the ground. If that happens, you'll need to aerate the lawn.

A lawn aerator is a tool that breaks up the soil, making room for water and air to get into the ground and the grassroots. This lawn care process promotes growth and ensures a healthy yard for spring.

3. Make a Soil Assessment

The ideal pH for soil is 7, which is neutral. Anything below pH 7 means your soil is acidic and will likely spawn moss growth. In the case of a yard that is too acidic, adding ground limestone to the soil can help balance it out.

On the other hand, soil with a pH higher than 7 is too alkaline. In that case, adding compost or elemental sulfur to the top layer of the yard will help nudge it back to neutral.
