Although golf may be a low-impact sport, the precision and constant swinging motion it requires can take a toll on the body, specifically the hips. Frequent use of these muscles can lead to discomfort in the region, affecting your balance and ability to play. In some cases, physical therapy is required to alleviate pain and restore mobility. The following are some common hip injuries golfers can experience and tips on how to prevent them.

What Hip Injuries Commonly Affect Golfers?

1. Muscle Strain

When you rotate your hips to tee off, pressure is placed on the hip flexors, also known as iliopsoas. The iliopsoas control stability and rotation, and over time, the repetitive motion tightens the muscles to the point that tears develop in the fibers. The built-up tension can limit your range of movement, affect your balance, and weaken the muscles in this area. Stretching before you hit the course can loosen up your body and reduce the risk of overstraining the hip region.

2. Osteoarthritis

Cartilage acts as a cushion between bones and joints, but when it deteriorates, the two come into direct contact, rubbing against each other and triggering inflammation. When the joints in your hip area become inflamed, it can develop into osteoarthritis. For a golfer, the condition can be caused by overuse of the muscles around the hip, but it could also be a result of genetics, aging, or injury. Avoiding excess tension in the region is one way to prevent the onset, but if you already suffer from it, physical therapy can help alleviate symptoms.

3. Bursitis

This condition involves the bursa, which is a sac filled with fluid located between the hip and upper leg on each side of the body, also called the greater trochanter. It keeps tendons and ligaments from rubbing too harshly together and growing irritated. One or both of these areas can become inflamed, due to the frequent back and forth motion required when swinging a golf club, and form into bursitis. It can create pain that starts in the hip and travels down to the leg. You may be able to prevent it by improving your swinging techniques to make sure you’re practicing the correct form.
