Driveways are built to withstand traffic and the elements, but they’re not impervious to damage. Winter weather can take a toll on concrete, but so can certain chemical deicers. Here’s a brief guide to understanding why deicers are detrimental and what alternatives are available.

How Does Rock Salt Damage Driveways?

Many deicers like rock salt can infiltrate concrete’s pores and break down the binders in asphalt driveways. This allows more moisture to infiltrate as the snow and ice melt.

As the moisture re-freezes and thaws, it can cause the pavement to expand and contract, making it more susceptible to damage and wear. Products containing acetate or formate are particularly harmful. Chemical deicers can also produce runoff that may harm animals and the surrounding ecosystem.

What Alternative Solutions Are Available?

Snow melting mats are usually used in entryways and stairways, but you can also plug them into outdoor power outlets. These consist of a heating element between two layers of rubber and can melt several inches of snow within a couple of hours.

Sand absorbs sunlight, which can accelerate snow and ice melting. It also adds traction, reducing the risk of slips and falls. Coffee grounds can produce similar results. You can add kitty litter to the mixture as well. While litter doesn’t melt snow, it can provide additional traction.

Heated driveways are another option. This involves installing electric heating coils or hydronic tubing to melt snow and ice. While this is the most expensive option, it can last for several years and requires little or no maintenance.
