Stand-up paddleboarding (SUP) is both a full-body workout and an exciting recreational activity for adventurous travelers. However, it often involves trial and error to master. If you’re heading out on the water for the first time, the following guide explores some basic safety guidelines you should know.

Do:

Use the right gear.

Although you might see experienced individuals going out with just a board and paddle, beginners need a few more items to ensure a safe and positive experience. In addition to a stand-up paddleboard and SUP paddle, you should have a personal flotation device (PFD), a leash to tether you to the board, and a safety whistle. When paddling at night, keep a light on board.

Choose calm waters.

Know your limits when paddleboarding. Waves and rushing waters may look more fun, but water is powerful and dangerous for those without experience. Until you've had more practice, only ride in calm waters and pay attention to how it’s flowing. Look up the weather forecast beforehand to check the wind speed as well. On a SUP, you are essentially a sail, so lie down on the board if the wind starts to pick up.

Don’t:

Look down at the board.

It may be tempting to watch your feet when you first start paddleboarding. However, when your head is down, your body is more likely to rock backward. The best way to maintain balance is to stare ahead at the horizon with a straight back. Try to hold your body weight over your toes.

Fall onto the board.

You’re just starting to find your balance, so there’s a good chance of falling down at some point during your first SUP excursion. When you feel yourself begin to slip, aim to land entirely in the water since the board and fins can be painful to hit. When using a leash, you won’t need to worry about losing the board.
