Your kitchen countertops are among the most noticeable features in the room. While they can be the standout focal point of this space, it’s also important that they complement your other design elements to create a cohesive look. As you plan your kitchen makeover, here’s how to ensure your new counters will harmonize with your flooring, cabinets, and backsplash.

Choose a Color Scheme

With kitchen features, the objective is to create a complementary yet mixed design. In other words, you don’t want the same shades or patterns for all the features; otherwise, the space will appear monochromatic and lacking in visual interest. Give your kitchen countertops, backsplash, flooring, and cabinets the opportunity to stand out on their own by selecting one color family and choosing slightly different shades for each.

When considering a color scheme, think about the shades that appeal to you most. Some people prefer bright whites complemented by contrasting darker shades, while others prefer a fully neutral palette featuring shades of white, gray, tan, or brown. Of course, you can also incorporate color, too. Many homeowners choose one color to highlight in one area of the room, such as on the backsplash or cabinets, and then use neutrals for the rest of the space. Contemporary spaces are known for contrast and bolder statements, whereas traditional or farmhouse-style kitchens often feature warmer shades and less contrast.

Select a Primary Feature & Complement

Once you have a color scheme in mind, it’s time to start selecting your features. Consider starting with the kitchen countertops. Typically, the countertops serve as the room’s signature element, drawing the eye the most. That's why it's easiest to choose countertops in your desired shade before selecting complementary floors, backsplash, and cabinets.

Select your cabinets based on not only color but also pattern. For example, a countertop with a very veiny or marbled pattern will look best against a more pared-down backsplash, but a subtler pattern on the stone can allow more freedom with a busier backsplash. Once you have the cabinets and backsplash, choose your cabinets, and finally, the flooring. You can select the flooring as a contrasting piece that’s much darker or lighter than your cabinets and counters for a vivid pop. Or, go with flooring in a similar shade as your counters or cabinets for a subtler effect. As you make your selections, get samples to bring home so you can see what the shades will look like against each other in your kitchen’s natural light.
