If you recently bought a car, you need to keep up with auto maintenance to make the most of the investment. Oil changes are particularly essential for lubricating and protecting the engine and its components. Here's what you should know about how often you should have this vital fluid changed.

3 Considerations When Scheduling Oil Changes

1. Type of Engine

Each manufacturer recommends specific intervals for changing engine oil based on the vehicle's motor. The owners manual tells you the range for normal driving. Generally, automakers recommend scheduling sessions every 3,000 miles or six months, whichever comes first.

Turbo-charged engines produce higher temperatures that put more strain on the oil and engine. Meanwhile, diesel-powered models generate more acidic byproducts and soot than gas-powered motors. Vehicles with these engines need oil changes more frequently than the general recommendation.

2. Short Trips

If you only drive short distances or often sit in stop-and-go traffic, you should shorten the time between oil changes, especially during the winter. Before the engine warms up, the temperature of the oil is lower than that of the thermostat.

As a result, fluids accumulate in the crankcase, which causes the vehicle to use more fuel. Changing the oil more frequently helps protect your vehicle and maintain good gas mileage.

3. Synthetic Lubricants & Efficient Oil Filters

Newer vehicles often use synthetic lubricants. These substances offer greater heat and oxidation stability, so they protect the engine's moving parts from wear more effectively than traditional oils.

Also, your vehicle might be equipped with a high-capture efficiency filter, which reduces wear on metal and helps synthetic oil last longer. These features allow you to go longer between changes. An auto technician can help you determine if you use synthetic lubricant and an efficient filter.
