Asphalt is a popular driveway material due to its longevity and durability. Yet, as with any other surface, certain substances can cause stains on the pavement. To remove stubborn stains such as oil and grease, here are a few tricks to try.

How Can You Remove Stains from Asphalt Driveways?

1. Use Cat Litter

While it won’t prevent a stain completely, cat litter can help you absorb fresh spills and prevent them from spreading. After you’ve mopped up what you can, put down kitty litter and stomp it down to soak up any oils on the driveway’s surface. Let the mixture sit overnight, then wash it away with a hose the following day.

2. Try Dish Soap

For stains that have already seeped into the pavement, use a generous amount of dish soap and a small amount of water. Scrub the solution using a stiff bristle brush. Then, rinse it all away using a hose.

3. Clean With Powdered Detergent

If the dish soap method hasn’t eliminated stains from the asphalt, try powdered laundry detergent next. Sprinkle the detergent over the stain until it’s fully covered. Add a small amount of water and repeat the scrubbing process. Allow it to sit for one hour, then rinse with a hose.

4. Turn to Bleach

One of the most potent stain-fighting agents available, bleach can eradicate many stubborn dark spots. Just be sure your driveway is fully rinsed before applying it, as bleach can be dangerous to inhale when mixed with other chemicals, including ammonia. Apply a small amount of bleach and use your stiff bristle brush to scrub away any remaining stains.

5. Apply a Professional Degreaser

When all else fails, one last method to try is a professional degreaser. Available at many hardware stores, these strong products are made for getting stains out of durable materials like asphalt. Depending on the manufacturer’s recommendations, the solution may need to be diluted with water. After applying, scrub the degreaser into the driveway vigorously before rinsing to remove the stain.
