Most vehicle owners understand that an automatic car wash isn't going to provide the same level of attention and cleanliness as professional auto detailing. But what you may not realize is that an automatic car wash can actually pose a number of possible dangers to your vehicle. Three of the most serious are discussed below.

What Is the Risk of Taking Your Vehicle to an Automatic Car Wash?

1. Harsh Cleaning Products

Car washes are designed to clean vehicles in as little time as possible. They aren't intended to provide customized care like auto detailing. They want you in and out in a hurry, so they need to utilize cleaning products that can get the job done quickly.

And many of these products contain harsh, toxic chemicals that are simply too potentially corrosive to the average car. One of the most common chemicals used is hydrofluoric acid, which, over time, can eat away at your vehicle's paint and wax.

2. Paint Damage

It's not just corrosive acids that can damage your paint; so too can the automatic rollers and scrubbers used to remove dirt and debris. If any of the vehicles that went through the wash before yours were particularly dirty or muddy, the rollers and scrubbers might retain some of the dirt, grime, and rocks. Then, when it's your turn, the cleaning mechanism will slap against your vehicle and bring the muck along with it. This can cause paint scratches, nicks, and, in extreme cases, dents.

3. A Less Thorough Cleaning

Automatic car washes only wash specific parts of your vehicle. There's no way that automated machines can take into account the different sizes and structures of the vehicles they're washing, so some will naturally be cleaned less effectively than others.

As a result, grime can accumulate on harder to reach areas, which can trigger corrosion, damage the body and internal parts, jeopardize vehicle performance, and, of course, make the car less visually appealing. For a comprehensive clean, take your car to an auto detailing professional.
