Becoming a parent for the first time is an amazing feeling, but it's also quite stressful. Accordingly, you may wonder whether your baby's ailment requires the assistance of a pediatric health specialist, which can be hard to determine when you're in parental panic mode. Here are a few times when it makes sense to reach out for help right away.

3 Reasons to Contact a Pediatrician About Your Baby's Health

1. Fevers

Fevers in children are not always serious, as they're a common part of the flu and other illnesses. However, fevers in infants and babies must be taken more seriously depending on your child's age and how high their temperature is. If your child is under three months old and has an elevated temperature, contact a doctor immediately. From three to six months, a rectal temperature of 101 degrees or higher also requires immediate care. You should also seek assistance if the fever has persisted for three or more days.

2. Stomach Issues

Bouts of vomiting and diarrhea that accompany common ailments aren't always a major issue and are often resolved with home care and rest. The risk is your baby becoming dehydrated, which can occur if they continuously experience stomach issues.

In general, schedule a pediatric health appointment for vomiting and diarrhea that lasts 24 hours or longer. And get immediate assistance if you notice signs of dehydration, such as a lack of tears when crying, dry lips, and darkly colored urine.

3. Skin Rashes

Babies frequently experience rashes and other skin issues due to minor causes, such as irritation from diapers. They may be more serious if they also involve a fever, as this could be a sign of a deeper infection. Any rash that lasts longer than three days or so should also be assessed, especially if it's obviously bothering your child. Look for blisters, oozing, and facial swelling, all of which may indicate a more serious health issue.
