As the months get colder and the weather becomes more unpredictable, we tend to see more injuries as a result of falls. Keeping safe this winter season means understanding your risk and the measures you can take to prevent a fall from happening outside and inside the home.

Evaluate your overall health

  • Have an annual physical with your doctor, including cardiac and blood pressure problems
  • Have your hearing and eyesight tested
  • Talk to your doctor about any medications you take, and the possible side affects
  • Avoid excessive alcohol consumption
  • Avoid/quit smoking
  • Get plenty of sleep at night
  • Eat a healthy diet
  • Exercise and stay physically active
  • If you have had a previous fall and are over the age of 65, ask your doctor about getting a
    Dexa (bone density) scan

Steps to Prevent Falls Outside the Home

  • Wear corrective hearing or eyewear
  • Wear appropriate footwear that grips
  • Test the ground for ice before getting out of your car
  • If sidewalks are wet/icy, walk on the grass
  • Use railings and/or assisted walking devices when necessary
  • Use salt or cat litter on sidewalks and walkways
  • Hire or ask for help with shoveling
  • Be mindful of uneven surfaces

Prevent Falls Inside the Home

  • Make sure your home is properly lit
  • Have a clear path free of clutter
  • Keep cords and appliances out of walkways
  • Make sure railings are installed 30 inches above the entire length of all stairs
  • Use non-slip mats on shower/tub floors
  • Use rubber mats under rugs to prevent sliding
  • Do not walk in socks or stockings
  • Store frequently used cooking equipment in easy to reach locations
