The phrase “move it or lose it” has some medical science behind it when it comes to the health of your joints. The winter months are an especially hard time to stay active while we hunker down under a blanket until spring. The hard facts are, limiting movement often weakens muscles, compounding joint trouble, and affecting your posture, setting off a cascade of further problems. Keeping your joints moving with the right set of exercise can be a long-lasting way to help with joint pain.

Tips to keep you moving during winter:

  • Explore your local community center for dance, swim, yoga and other classes
  • Visit local stores, such as the mall, and walk
  • Search for roller skating rinks or local bowling alleys in your area
  • Go to your local library for exercise dvd’s to do at home
  • Take up a winter sport, such as ice skating, snow shoeing, or skiing

Keeping safe while moving during winter:

  • Outside activities are best during daylight if possible
  • Remember it is just as important to stay hydrated in winter
  • When dressing for outdoor activities avoid cotton for your first layer, instead choose moisture wicking material, and choose water and wind resistant top layers
  • After outdoor activities keep your layers on for 10-15 minutes before changing to allow your body to adjust to the temperature change
