Fajitas are a staple of Mexican cuisine. They are generally served with all the ingredients in separate piles, so you can assemble each one to your exact preferences. While there are no set rules for doing this, the following guide offers tips for getting the most from your fajita experience the next time you visit a Mexican restaurant.

How to Assemble Fajitas

Mexican cuisine

Fajita platters generally include warm tortillas, seasoned chicken or skirt steak strips, onions, peppers, refried beans, shredded cheese, sour cream, guacamole, and salsa. At a restaurant, you’ll usually receive a tray with these separate ingredients, along with a plate for assembling them.

Starting with a single tortilla on your plate, add any sauces like sour cream or guacamole directly to the center of the tortilla first. You can use your spoon to spread them evenly on the warm shell. This holds the rest of the ingredients in place and ensures that you get some soft toppings in every bite. Placing strips of the meat in the center of the tortilla should come next, followed by onions and peppers. The finishing touch should be the shredded cheese.

How to Eat Fajitas

When all the toppings have been added, some of the tortilla should still show along the edges. This lets you fold it without all the toppings falling out. Fold the bottom upward, then bring the two sides up, so they slightly overlap at the top, with the bottom remaining flat to hold in your fillings. Once you’re ready to eat, bite the open end and enjoy.
