Is Chewing Gum Detrimental to Your Mouth? Ask The Dental Care Experts at Pedodontic Associates
While growing up, you probably heard many times that chewing gum is bad for your teeth. Would you be surprised to learn that certain types of gum are actually beneficial? Pedodontic Associates, a dentistry group in Hawaii, specializes in pediatric and adolescent dentistry. The five doctors practice in three locations on the islands of Oahu and Maui; in 2011, Honolulu Magazine named them the best pediatric dentists in Hawaii.
They have a few myth-busting tips for the parents of the kids who like to chew gum:
- Increases Saliva: Each time your child chomps down on the piece of gum, it releases a new burst of flavor; this produces saliva. While your kids might call it “yucky,” saliva helps wash away acids caused by digestion. Chewing gum simulates saliva flow 10 times more effectively than not chewing gum.
- Prevents Tooth Decay: According to a study from the American Dental Association, chewing sugarless gum for 20 minutes after meals can help prevent tooth decay. Chewing sugarless gum may cause bacteria to lose the ability to stick to teeth.
While the sugary flavored gums might cause more harm than good, chewing sugarless gum can be beneficial to oral health. Chewing gum, however, should not replace important practices like brushing and flossing teeth.
