Diesel engines have many benefits, including exceptional fuel economy, limited maintenance needs, minimal fire risk, and greater torque. But, like any engine, they are not immune to occasional problems. Understanding the causes and signs of common issues can help you schedule timely diesel truck repairs. Here are a few of the problems these engines are prone to experience.

What Are Some Common Diesel Engine Issues?

1. Oil Oxidation

If you don't drive your diesel truck regularly, the oil may start to oxidize. This means that air gets into the oil supply and creates bubbles, preventing it from providing adequate lubrication and possibly leading to engine damage. Signs to look for include knocking or rumbling noises coming from the engine, which often signal metal parts rubbing together and creating friction; the scent of oil in the cab; and oil that looks noticeably darker rather than translucent.

2. Excessive Black Exhaust

Any diesel engine naturally emits more black exhaust than an unleaded fuel engine. But when the exhaust is excessive, there's likely a problem that needs to be addressed by a diesel truck repair professional.

If you notice smoke or an unpleasant odor in the cab, or you've been fined for violating clean air laws, the extreme amount of exhaust is probably due to an imbalance in the air-to-fuel ratio. Possible causes include a failing injector, injector pump, or air filter.

3. Lack of Power

When your diesel engine can't provide the energy needed to power your vehicle, the cause is usually a dirty fuel filter, too much lubrication, a loose throttle, or problems with a fuel injector. You will feel the engine struggling when starting it or when accelerating. A lack of engine power can make your vehicle difficult, if not impossible, to drive and control effectively, so diesel truck repairs should be a priority when this occurs.
