If you have lost a tooth or multiple teeth, you may have a few options for replacement. Many patients prefer dental implants over dentures since they look and feel like real teeth. However, not everyone is a good candidate for this procedure. Take a look at what they are, if you may be a good candidate, and how to care for them.

What Are Dental Implants?

A dental implant replaces the root of a false tooth with a metal screw that's placed into the jawbone and topped with a crown. Since the titanium screw fuses into your jaw bone, the implants won't move and are less likely to break or decay. If you are missing one or more teeth and have a healthy jaw, you could be a good candidate for dental implants. You also need to have good oral hygiene and be a non-smoker to qualify.

Most patients prefer dental implants over other options like bridgework and dentures. However, the process involves several surgeries to complete, and there is a long recovery time compared to other dental procedures.

What to Expect During the Procedure

There are three types of dental implants: removable, fixed, and a combination of both. The removable implant is a metal frame surrounded by artificial teeth and gums that are attached to an implanted abutment. It can be removed for cleaning, similar to dentures.

The fixed implant includes one crown per implanted screw and cannot be removed. If several teeth need to be replaced, there may be a combination of the two types as a solution.

Both procedures are outpatient and can take several visits to the dentist, which may include removal of the damaged tooth, preparation of the jawbone, bone grafting, placement of the abutment, and placement of the crown. You'll need time to heal and recover in between each visit.

How to Care for Them

Caring for dental implants is the same as caring for your real teeth. You can brush and floss as normal, and you should continue to get professional cleanings from the dentist twice a year.

Dentists may also recommend antimicrobial mouthwash or other aids to improve their appearance. Not properly caring for implants can include bleeding, discomfort, and even loss of gum tissue or bone.
