Flossing is one of the keys to lasting dental health, as it removes food particles and bacteria between the teeth and gums that your toothbrush cannot access. However, too many people make mistakes with this daily teeth cleaning practice that can affect their dental health over time. Below are common flossing errors to avoid.

What Common Flossing Mistakes Do I Need to Know About?

1. Not Cleaning Under the Gumline

While running the filament between the teeth removes some stuck food particles, it does not clean under the gumline and therefore increases the risk of gingivitis and gum disease. The correct way to floss is to gently rub the filament between each tooth, then make a “C” shape around the tooth to clean below the gums. Proper flossing leaves your mouth feeling extra clean.

2. “Snapping” the Floss

Forcing the floss between teeth, or “snapping” the filament, puts excessive pressure on the gums. Irritation, redness, bleeding, and discomfort can result, with long-term snapping contributing to gum recession. Use a gentle touch when flossing–if you experience difficulties because your teeth are so close together, discuss alternative options with your dentist, such as water flossers that gently irrigate the gums to remove food particles and bacteria.

3. Flossing After Brushing

Cleaning between the teeth and gums before brushing removes stuck food particles, which is helpful if you use fluoride toothpaste. The fluoride is able to cover more of each tooth’s surface area for optimal remineralization and greater cavity protection. Fluoride features antibacterial properties that inhibit bacterial growth and encourages the production of fluorapatite, a bacteria-and-acid-resistant form of tooth enamel.

4. Using the Same Piece of Floss

Flossing between teeth with the same floss re-introduces bacteria to your mouth. Use a clean piece of floss for each tooth, or 1 to 4 inches of filament. You’ll need about 18 inches of floss total to clean every tooth. Dispose the teeth cleaning product after you’re finished, since it cannot be saved for further use.
