Competitive cheerleading is an exciting activity that requires strength, dedication, and skill. Whether you have a child just getting into it or who has been performing in competitions for several years, there are many interesting facts about the sport that you may not be unaware of. Here are some fascinating details about the origins and evolution.

What Are Some Interesting Facts About Cheerleading?

1. Men Were The Original Cheerleaders

Cheerleading is often thought of in modern times as a woman's sport. However, men were the only participants when it began in Great Britain in the 1860s and eventually came to the United States in the 1880s.

The original cheerleaders were members of the male pep club at Princeton, and their job was to rally for the school's football team. Women began cheerleading in the early 1900s.

2. People Have Set Cheerleading Records Around the World

The Guinness Book of World Records contains several notable cheerleading feats. First, there's the world's largest cheer gathering, which took place in China in 2018. More than 2,000 people participated in the event. The world's tallest cheer pyramid, which consisted of 60 individuals, happened in New Zealand in 2017.

3. All-Start Teams Began in the 1980s

Cheerleading wasn't an organized competitive sport until the 1980s. Initially, schools had individual squads that cheered on teams and didn't compete in outside competitions.

Today, competitive squads develop routines, demonstrate gymnastic skills, and dance in sync as a group. Judges score teams based on the number and complexity of stunts, their timing and rhythm, appearance, and unity. Talented squads often travel throughout the country or even internationally to compete with other teams.

4. Cheerleaders Learn Multiple Skills

Competitive cheerleading is a highly versatile sport. Young dancers learn to perform, move in sync with music, work as a team, and perform complex routines. Cheerleaders gain physical strength, flexibility, and discipline through ongoing practice. Additionally, they make new friends, learn how to compete under pressure, and gain confidence as they progress.
