After a long day of work, you probably want a strong cup of coffee to give yourself a jumpstart. While any version of this drink delivers some caffeine, not all are created equal in the amount they contain. Therefore, choosing the right blend can make a big difference in how you feel after drinking. Follow this guide to help you decide what to order when you need an energy boost.

3 Factors that Determine the Amount of Caffeine in Coffee

1. Beans

The type of bean used for a brew makes a big difference in how much caffeine the drink contains. There are two primary plant species used to produce the source of coffee. One of them is Arabica, which is more popular due to its sweet, fruity taste. On the other hand, Robusta is earthier and more bitter. However, a coffee made from this bean will automatically give you more of a boost, as it naturally contains twice as much caffeine as Arabica.

2. Roast

All coffee beans are roasted before being ground to make coffee. Although some people believe that dark roast beans provide more energy than lighter options, that's not entirely true. The amount of caffeine present doesn't change when beans are roasted.

However, the process causes the seeds to lose some of their mass. Baristas then add more beans to a dark roast so that it measures the same weight as a lighter one. Because of its composition, the former option will have more caffeine than other coffee varieties.

3. Type of Drink

Contrary to popular belief, a shot of espresso does not contain more caffeine than a cup of drip coffee. This drink is simply more concentrated than others. A 1.5-ounce espresso includes 60 to 80 milligrams of caffeine compared to 70 to 140 milligrams in an 8-ounce cup of drip coffee.

Ordering a latte can give you a higher energy boost than a coffee of the same size since most specialty beverages include at least two shots of espresso. You can also make the drink stronger by asking for extra caffeine. Purchasing a "Red Eye" beverage, which adds at least one espresso shot to regular coffee, will give you the most caffeine possible.
