A Physical Therapist's Advice on Total Hip and Knee Replacements
The best way to manage pain after having your surgery:
- Keep your leg elevated in a "Status Quo Position", which is putting your leg up on a recliner or ottoman (with no gap between the ottoman and chair, so the leg is supported all the way down) most of the time. DO NOT leave your leg down on the floor for greater than a meal time/sitting at the table during the first 3 weeks after surgery.
- Elevate your leg above your heart in a lying position, while supporting the full leg with pillows for a minimum of 30 minutes, twice a day.
- Use ice with a thin pillow case barrier for 15 minutes-no more. Repeat 3 to 5 times daily. Wait an hour before reusing ice. Use the ice while elevating above your heart for more painful times.
- Stand and loosen up within every two hours.
Home care is proper for the first 2 weeks following your surgery. After that time, out-patient therapy is the next step and should be scheduled in advance, so there is no delay after Home care discharges and beginning your out-patient care.
