When you think of Mexican food, burritos are probably among the first images that come to mind. The popular dish consists of a tortilla stuffed with assorted vegetables, meats, beans, and cheeses, as well as salsa, sour cream, and spices. Learn about the unique history of this Mexican food staple, including how it became popular in the U.S., here.
Origins
The name of this favorite Mexican food translates to “little donkey” in Spanish, with its origins dating back thousands of years. Starting in 10,000 B.C., Mesoamerican people who lived in what is now Mexico often wrapped their food in corn tortillas. Centuries later, the burrito was mentioned in the Dictionary of Mexican Spanish by Cuban writer Félix Ramos y Duarte.
The burrito was sold as a street food in the early 20th century, possibly by a man named Juan Méndez during the Mexican Revolution between 1910 and 1920. Méndez sold his food throughout the city of Ciudad Juárez, supposedly using a donkey for transportation and wrapping ingredients in large tortillas to maintain their warmth.
Growing Popularity
The dish first arrived in the U.S. in the 1900s thanks to migrant workers, with the El Cholo Spanish Café in Los Angeles, CA credited as the first official American seller. The tortilla-wrapped foods were easy to pack for lunch and gained popularity in the 1940s through the 1960s and beyond.
Soon, they became synonymous with Southern Californian cuisine. The frozen version of the Mexican food was created in 1956 by an inventor named Duane R. Robert, which allowed grocery stores throughout the country to sell it.
Modern Options
As this portable meal became widespread, so did variations. Taco Bell and Chipotle made fast food versions starting in 1954 and 1993, respectively. Chipotle is credited with launching the Mission variation, a super-sized option stuffed with salsa, meat, and corn that originally became popular in the Mission District of San Francisco.
The dish’s evolution continues, with variations including different vegetables, such as cucumbers and peppers, as well as other healthy foods like mushrooms and avocados. There have even been kosher versions featuring pastrami, as well as options with hot dogs and chili.
