Many people have visited a bowling alley at some point for a few casual games, but there are techniques that allow bowlers to get consistently great scores. If you’re interested in improving before a big get-together or friendly competition, keep these tips in mind to bowl like a professional.

What Are Simple Ways to Boost Bowling Skills?

1. Practice Stance and Swing

Before the next game, visit a bowling alley to practice perfecting your swing and footing. Carefully approach the lane with your non-throwing hand supporting the ball while you line up the shot. Gently but firmly, swing the ball straight back without letting your arm wrap around behind you. Keep your wrist straight, allow the ball to swing forward, and release just after the ball begins to arc upward in its swing again. Even if the bowling ball doesn't hit all the pins, this approach will help your throws stay straight and consistent.

2. Pick the Correct Ball

In general, a bowling ball should be equal to roughly 10% of your body weight, up to 16 pounds. Most women find a ball around 11 to 12 pounds to be comfortable, while most men prefer something between 14 and 15 pounds. This is only a guideline, however, so choose the weight that feels best in your hand.

Grip is actually more important than weight, since a ball that is too loose or too snug can be just as difficult to swing as one that is too heavy to lift comfortably. Test a few balls to find an appropriate fit. The right finger holes should allow you to slip your fingers in and out comfortably without being too loose. There are also left- and right-handed bowling balls. Left-handed balls have a ring finger hole slightly further away from the thumb hole, which can improve gripping for some right-handed bowlers, as well.

3. Pay Attention to Lane Markings

The line separating the approaching area from the oiled wood surface is the foul line. Stepping over it will get you a foul and cost points, even if you knock over all the pins. The arrows and dots near the beginning of a lane and 15 feet towards the pins are there to help align your shot. Depending on which hand you use, aim for the second arrow from the right or left to gauge where among the pins the ball will strike.
