How to Recover After Dancing
1. Always Cool Down
Although it’s tempting to be done for the day after a rigorous workout, you should never skip the cool-down process. Stretching and gentle exercise after dance classes gives your muscles a chance to wind down and transition into the recovery period. This allows your heart rate to slow down gradually, which helps regulate blood flow.
2. Raise Your Legs
While dancing is a full-body workout, it is particularly stressful on the bottom half of the body. Lying down and elevating the legs above your heart can help reduce pressure and improve circulation. Use pillows to prop them up, or rest your feet against a wall.
3. Nourish and Hydrate
Following dance lessons, you probably feel hungry and thirsty. Drinking plenty of water will replenish the electrolytes you sweat out, and eating will refuel the body and help the muscles recover.
What and when you eat will also matter. Reach for low-fat, low-sugar proteins and carbohydrates, such as yogurt and fruit, protein smoothies, peanut butter sandwiches, and turkey on whole grain bread. Try to eat within 2 hours of your dance class, if possible.
4. Get Plenty of Sleep
Sleep gives your body a chance to recover. Cells and tissues are repaired during rest, and your heart rate and breathing cycles throughout the night can improve cardiovascular health. On the other hand, a lack of adequate slumber can affect performance. It impairs a dancer’s ability to think clearly, react quickly, and remember steps accurately. Therefore, aim for 7–9 hours of sleep each night.
5. Soothe Sore Muscles
If your muscles start to feel sore, treat them with cold therapy. Wrap an ice pack in a cloth and apply it to the aching muscle for up to 15 minutes. Keep it off for 30 to 40 minutes, then repeat the process. Cold therapy is most effective on the day you experience pain. If the soreness continues after two days or more, a warm bath or heat pack can help ease the tension.
