With grilling season here, you're probably considering keeping a backup propane tank on hand so you don't run out of gas when you have a line of hungry guests waiting for their burgers and hot dogs. Storing the tank properly (both now and in the offseason) ensures safety for your home and family. To prevent harmful gas leaks and potential explosions, keep these storage do's and don'ts in mind.

Do:

Store propane tanks outdoors.

Never store propane tanks indoors, such as in the basement, attached garage, or on the deck or porch. Not only can the tank potentially leak, releasing harmful and explosive gas, but indoor hazards, like a spark from static electricity, could ignite the tank.

Instead, keep the tank outdoors in a dry and shaded area. Propane tanks can be safely stored in a detached shed if there is plenty of ventilation and the space remains cool. If temperatures rise above 120 degrees, the tank pressure will rapidly increase and potentially cause an explosion.

Check the valve before storing.

Checking the valves to ensure they are securely closed is especially important if you are storing the tank in a shed. Even a small source of ignition can cause a fire or explosion if the component is open. Remember to check the valve even if you think the tank is empty. Gas vapors can still be present and escape even when there isn't any propane left.

Don't:

Let the tank sit on the floor or ground.

When the tank sits on the ground, it can be exposed to moisture underneath, which can cause deterioration. If the tank rusts, it can lead to a gas leak. Even if you put your extra propane tanks in a shed, keep them on cinder blocks or wood pallets to keep them off the ground.

Store propane tanks on their sides.

All propane tanks are equipped with emergency pressure release valves, which help prevent explosions if the pressure inside the tank causes it to expand. Storing tanks on the side, though, can prevent this valve from working properly. Keep tanks upright while in storage to ensure that the valve works if there is an unsafe increase in pressure.
