For many people, a well-rounded oral care routine includes brushing your teeth twice a day, flossing day or night and seeing your dentist for a teeth cleaning bi-annually. However, many people forget to clean their tongues in the process, allowing lingering bacteria to proliferate. The tongue's shape and texture make it an ideal place for bacteria to thrive unless it's cleaned regularly. Here is a guide to brushing your tongue, why it's important and how to do it.

What Are the Benefits?

Similar to a teeth cleaning, the best way to keep your tongue healthy is to ensure its surface is free of harmful debris. The mouth is filled with different types of oral bacteria. The bacteria that reside on the tongue can cause oral health care conditions, bad breath and plaque buildup.

By scraping or brushing your tongue daily, you reduce sulfur compounds that cause bad breath and keep your taste buds working properly. When microorganisms are left on your tongue, they can create a biofilm that is destructive to your gum tissue and teeth, as well as your immune system. A scraper or toothbrush is the only way to remove it entirely.

How Should You Use a Scraper?

Tongue scrapers are the most effective oral care practice for your tongue. To try it yourself, stick your tongue out as far as you can and place your tongue scraper as far as your mouth allows. Press the scraper while moving it forward toward the front of your mouth. Rinse your scraper with warm water to remove any debris after each stroke. Repeat these steps 2 to 5 more times and then rinse with warm water.

Can You Use a Toothbrush?

This method starts the same way as it does with a scraper, except you use a toothbrush. From the back of your mouth, you will brush your tongue back and forth until you've brushed the entire surface. Lastly, rinse your mouth with warm water. It may be easier to use your toothbrush and brush your tongue as the final step in your oral care routine.
