There’s nothing as exhilarating as finding out you’re pregnant. But after the rush of joy has passed, it’s time to make a plan and start preparing for the months ahead. Pregnancy, like life as a parent, is a journey. While it can be unpredictable, there are some things you can do with your OB-GYN to make the path a little easier.

4 Steps to Take When You Find Out You’re Pregnant

1. Schedule Prenatal Care

The early stages have a significant impact on the fetus’ development, which is why it’s crucial to schedule prenatal care as soon as you find out you’re pregnant. After your first antenatal appointment, you’ll need to schedule periodic checkups with your OB-GYN to keep an eye on your health and fetus development. If you’d like to work with a midwifery team as well, let your doctor know. Typically, you’d meet with a midwife at about eight to 10 weeks of pregnancy.

2. Rest

For many women, the first trimester is the most challenging at times due OBGYN to fatigue and morning sickness. You may find yourself irregularly tired even after light activity and a full night’s sleep. This is because, during the first trimester, your body is creating the placenta, which requires a significant amount of energy. Practice healthy sleep hygiene and aim for six to eight hours a night. You may also need to take naps if possible, as caffeine is discouraged during pregnancy.

3. Focus on Your Health

A healthy mother is crucial to a healthy baby. Focus on your health and make lifestyle adjustments if necessary, including cutting out alcohol, tobacco, and caffeine, and eating a nutritious, balanced diet. Reduce stress and try to find ways to relax, whether it’s prenatal yoga, aromatherapy, or meditation. Talk with your doctor to address any existing health conditions. The OB-GYN may also recommend supplements such as vitamins or minerals. Make sure to keep moving as well; exercise will help you maintain strength and a healthy weight throughout pregnancy.

4. Prepare a Maternity Leave Plan

Maternity leave is different from one company to the next, and it’s important to find out about your job’s policies as soon as possible. While your boss and coworkers will doubtless be excited for you, your absence may also be a challenge for them. The earlier you inform your work, the better for everyone’s sake. Along with determining how long you’ll be gone and when, try to anticipate long-term changes you may require, such as a different schedule to allow you time to care for your baby when you return.
