Visiting a gynecologist is an important aspect of women’s health that may be scheduled as early as the age of 13. Yet some women delay this appointment until later, as pelvic exams generally aren’t required until the age of 21. No matter your age, you’re likely to have some questions about your first visit. Find out what to expect below so you can put your mind at ease.

What to Expect From Your First Gynecologist Appointment

1. You May Not Need a Pelvic Exam

As mentioned above, women under the age of 21 typically won’t need a pelvic exam. There are exceptions, however. If you’re sexually active or experiencing any unfamiliar symptoms, the doctor will likely want to perform some screenings. These will consist of a physical exam, in which the doctor will physically check your vagina and gently press on your pelvis to feel your uterus and ovaries.

They may also perform a Pap smear. In this procedure, they’ll use a long, cotton-tipped swab to take some cells from your cervix, which will allow them to test for diseases.

2. You’ll Be Asked About Your Cycle

gynecologistYour doctor will likely ask questions about your cycle to find out about your reproductive health history. Be prepared to talk about when you got your first period, how many days a typical cycle lasts, and whether you experience any uncomfortable symptoms, such as painful cramping or heavy bleeding. These symptoms may indicate reproductive issues that could require medications or other interventions later on, such as polycystic ovarian syndrome or endometriosis.

3. You Can Come With Questions

Whether you’re interested in exploring birth control options or you simply have questions about aspects of your reproductive health, your doctor is ready to listen and help. Feel free to write out your questions in advance and bring them to your appointment so you don’t forget to bring up any talking points.
