If you're moving soon, you're probably already thinking about how difficult it can be to move larger pieces of furniture while avoiding any damage. Although furniture movers do a lot to protect your furniture during the transition, there are also some steps you can take to ensure the safety of your pieces. Here's a closer look at how to get your furniture ready for moving day.

How to Pack and Protect Furniture During a Move

1. Use the Right Supplies

Make sure you have enough protective supplies before moving day, so you don’t run out of materials. Take an inventory of all the pieces you'll need to move and wrap before making your shopping list. Bubble wrap is crucial to preventing damage to your furniture, along with plastic stretch wrap, sofa and mattress covers, sealable plastic bags, and corrugated cardboard sheets.

2. Disassemble the Furniture

Before you start packing, make sure you clean the furniture so that the dust and debris don’t scratch the wood during the move. Right before moving day, start to disassemble the furniture into smaller pieces. This will make it easier to pack in the moving truck.

Remove all the drawers from the dressers and pack smaller items inside of them. Place any screws in plastic bags and label them according to which piece of furniture they go with.

3. Load the Truck Correctly

The strategy furniture movers use to load the truck is crucial to keeping everything safe and damage-free. Make a wall of boxes on the back wall of the truck with the heaviest non-fragile containers.

Next, add square-shaped furniture, like dressers and desks, and place corrugated cardboard between pieces as padding. Mattresses go in the truck next, followed by upholstered items and any other small furniture.
