Water damage can occur for many reasons, from a leak to heavy rain after a storm, seeping into the building materials of your home. Mold and mildew can grow in these places within 24 to 48 hours because they provide a moist, dark environment, posing a hazard to the structure and your health. Professional mold removal is a secure way to solve the problem, but the following are measures you can take to possibly reduce the risk.

How to Prevent Mold After Water Damage

1. Remove Moisture and Wet Items

The first issue to tackle is eliminating the pools of water and any soaked objects in the room. Only do this if the water is clean and not from a natural flood or sewer as the liquid could be contaminated.

You can use a bucket to scoop up water and dump it outside of the home or rent a water vacuum, which sucks up the moisture. After, remove any damp rugs or pieces of furniture and place them outdoors to air dry. If they’re damaged beyond repair, it may be best to get rid of them because they could also harbor mold.

2. Dry the Area

Surfaces may still be wet, so absorbing the excess moisture is important to inhibit mold formation. Take a dry cloth or mop to pass over the affected areas and get into the crevices where liquid may still be present.  Run fans and dehumidifiers as necessary to dry out finished materials.  You may want to hire a professional to come in and help you identify where finished walls may be impacted.

Once you’ve thoroughly dried the space, it’s imperative to keep it that way for at least a few days. Using a dehumidifier can help control the humidity level and keep it at below 50%, which makes it more difficult for mold to develop.  If you have a basement, you should have a dehumidifier running.

3. Sanitize

If you want to ensure the room is as safe as possible, spraying an anti-microbial agent on all surfaces that got wet.  It can kill and inhibit bacteria, mold and other germs and is beneficial for mold removal if any have started to form that you don't see. Contact a professional to see what they use and where you can get those products.
