A functional water heater goes unnoticed most of the time, but repairs quickly become a priority when showers start to come in cold. Newer units may be repairable, but if a unit is nearing the end of its lifespan, these problems will only occur more frequently. Here are a few signs to look for so you know when to schedule a replacement rather than get more unneeded and costly water heater repairs.

How Can You Tell a Water Heater Should Be Replaced?

1. Rusty Water

Your water heater's storage tank will accumulate a buildup of hard minerals over time, which may cause the water to not heat properly or stay warm as long. If these deposits appear as visible rust or dirt in the water coming out of the hot water tap, or if you notice a metallic taste, these could be signs that the tank is decaying. A plumber may be able to resolve these issues temporarily, but once tank decay starts to happen, a replacement is likely more cost-effective than water heater repairs.

2. Age

A gas-powered tank will generally last about 10 years, while an electric one may last for 15 years before needing to be replaced. If the one in your home is getting close to or has passed this age, it could be time to get a new unit installed. In order to determine the age of the water heater, find the serial number that is usually printed on the top of the unit. If a date isn't evident, most manufacturers have a place on their website where you can search for the serial number to find the unit's age.

3. Leaks

If you notice a leak or puddles near the water heater, it could indicate a crack in the tank. The metal casing usually contracts and expands due to the warmth within, but sometimes these movements can cause fractures, especially as the unit ages. When this happens, it may result in a burst tank, and water heater repairs may be just as costly as a new unit.
