New bathroom cabinets are among the many ways to revitalize this essential room and improve its functionality. If you recently had new cabinets installed or will soon, maintaining your investment is naturally a top priority. Below are tips for keeping the cabinets in excellent condition.

How to Keep New Bathroom Cabinets in Great Shape

1. Use a White Vinegar and Water

Routine cleaning removes fingerprints, hairspray and other personal care product residue, dust, and grime from building up and causing premature wear. An all-purpose white vinegar and water solution keeps the cabinetry clean, whether it is made of wood or other materials, such as plywood and laminate. The acid in the vinegar isn’t strong enough to inflict damage and features disinfecting properties. Use ¼ cup of vinegar for every cup of water to create the solution.

You can also use mild dish soap and water to clean the bathroom cabinets. Whatever you decide, avoid saturating wood cabinets and wipe down any excess moisture to avoid warping issues.

2. Avoid Using Harsh Scrubbers

Paper towels and sponges work best for cabinet cleaning, as scrub brushes and scouring pads are too harsh and can scratch the material. However, refrain from using paper towels labeled as “stiff,” since they can scratch the cabinets as well. Scratching the cabinets not only leaves noticeable marks behind, it dulls the finish. Harsh cleansers featuring bleach, ammonia, organic solvents, or citric acid should be avoided for the same reason.

3. Maintain the Humidity Level

The bathroom is one of the most humid rooms in the home and prolonged exposure can eventually warp wooden cabinets. A quality ventilation system prevents wood swelling and contracting, so have yours checked if you think it’s malfunctioning. If your bathroom does not feature a ventilation system, have one installed to maintain your bathroom cabinets and prevent other high humidity-related issues, such as mildew and mold growth.

4. Lubricate the Hardware

Adding a manufacturer-recommended oil to the cabinet hardware as necessary eliminates annoying squeaks and unnecessary hinge wear. Wipe up any excess oil immediately to avoid drips that can stain your cabinets. To clean the hinges and other hardware, use a soapy water or vinegar/water mixture. For deep cleaning that removes tough dirt and grime, dip a soft-bristled toothbrush in your chosen solution.
