New hardwood floors give a home an elegant new look and will last for years. While the surface is relatively low-maintenance, it still needs to be cared for a certain way. Below are some habits to get into—and avoid—for beautiful, long-lasting hardwood.

Do:

Sweep or vacuum weekly.

Dust and grime can build up on hardwood floors and scratch the finish. Sweep or vacuum at least once a week to remove dirt before it wears down or gouges the protective coating and exposes the material to moisture and other substances that might stain. Never use steel wool or a hard-bristled brush to scrub the floors, since they will also scratch the finish.

Clean off at the door.

Placing shoe racks next to your home’s entrances keeps you and your family from tracking in dirt and bacteria. Encourage guests to take their shoes off as well. You may even want to provide slippers to preserve their socks or stockings. If you have pets, wipe their paws as soon as you come in from a walk so they don't track in any dirt or mud.

Don’t:

Clean with a wet mop.

Cleaning hardwood floors with a wet mop increases the risk of warping. Using hot water is harmful detrimental because it dissolves the finish. It might seem like the finish is only meant to create an attractive sheen, but it also protects the porous wood. Instead, use a soft microfiber towel or pad to soak up spills and only clean with a product designed for hardwood.

Walk on the floor with anything that can gouge it.

High heels and spiked athletic footwear scratch and dig into hardwood flooring, so only put on the shoes as soon as you're by the door to leave. Dog nails have the same effect, since they do not retract like cat claws do. Only wear soft shoes when walking on your wood floors and trim your dog’s nails regularly. If your dog is okay with having their paws handled, you can also apply nail caps to better protect the wood flooring.
