A Pediatric Dentist’s Tips for Brushing Your Baby’s Teeth
1. Start With Water Before Toothpaste
If your child is under the age of one, start out brushing their teeth with water as a base. This will help remove any leftover food and get your baby comfortable with caring for their teeth. Don’t use fluoride until they’re a few years old, but when you do, speak with your pediatric dentist about their children’s toothpaste recommendations.
2. Try Soft Bristles or a Washcloth
Since your little one’s gums are so sensitive, it’s important to avoid tough bristles or anything else that can cause irritation. Children’s dentists recommend starting out using your finger or a washcloth before reaching for a toothbrush. Just gently wipe around the gums and any teeth. Then, after their teeth have started to grow in, use a children’s soft-bristled toothbrush.
3. Be Gentle & Set a Routine
Above all else, be gentle when brushing your baby’s teeth. Take some time every morning and evening to brush, and pay attention to any new teeth that may grow in. It’s important to care for your child’s oral health, and starting a brushing routine will get them in the habit of practicing good hygiene. If you’re ever unsure as to what to use to brush or when to add in a fluoride toothpaste, give your pediatric dentist a call.
