5 Examples of Pediatric Dental Emergencies

1. Severe Toothache

A toothache should always be addressed by a dentist, but in minor cases, it doesn’t warrant an immediate trip to the office. It may simply be a result of a cavity that can be filled during a scheduled appointment. If your child’s face is swollen, however, it could indicate an infection that should be treated immediately. 

2. Soft Tissue Injuries

A cut or deep bite in the tongue, lip, or cheek may not necessitate an emergency visit if bleeding stops on its own. If the wound continues to bleed after applying pressure, however, call your child’s pediatrician or visit the emergency room for treatment. 

3. Knocked Out Tooth

A knocked out adult tooth requires immediate attention since there is a possibility of salvaging it if you act promptly. If the child is old enough to do so without swallowing the tooth, have them keep it in its socket or in the mouth beside the cheek until you reach the dentist’s office. Otherwise, transport it in a cup with milk.

4. Broken Tooth

A chipped or fractured permanent tooth can often be saved with quick action. Getting to your pediatric dentist quickly may prevent the tooth from becoming infected and avoid the need for extensive treatment. Have your child rinse their mouth with water, and save any pieces of the tooth if possible.

5. Facial or Head Trauma

If your child has sustained a blow to the head or jaw, take them to the nearest hospital. While dental intervention may be required, the first order of business is having their head or jaw injury assessed by emergency medical personnel.
