When in your attic, you may have noticed a pink material stuffed between floor joists and rafters. This residential insulation helps regulate energy efficiency and contributes to home comfort. Each variety has an R-value rating, an important factor in determining which one is best for your residence. If you need insulation replaced or added, here's what you should know about this measurement.

What Is R-Value?

R-value stands for “resistance value.” This number rates the material's ability to resist heat flow through it. The higher the value, the more temperature-resistant the residential insulation is.

Ratings appear with the letter R and a number, with R60 often the highest rating. You can find this label on the packaging or ask the contractor installing the insulation for the R-value.

Why Is It Important?

Thermal resistance is the process in which your home loses heat or is influenced by outdoor temperatures. When heat leaks from your attic, your HVAC system begins running more frequently to compensate. The unit wastes energy since it’s cycling more often, resulting in higher monthly electric bills. At the same time, your home also won’t be as comfortable because of the fluctuating temperatures.

While more insulation will better regulate home temperatures, it’s not always better. Residential insulation is only effective to a certain degree. For example, beyond 5 inches of insulation in interior walls is excessive, and adding more than 5 inches won’t make enough of a difference to justify the money you’re spending.

To determine the optimal amount, you’ll need to work with an insulation contractor. They’ll first determine the best material. Large insulation mats are common, though they're more prone to leaking than other options. Blown-in insulation can better fill in crevices, and spray foam can completely cover any openings, making these excellent long-term investments.
