Why Do Tree Roots Surface?

There are a variety of reasons tree roots may surface. For one, many tree species naturally have shallow root systems, and as they age, it’s common for their roots to emerge from beneath the ground. This includes maple, poplar, aspen, and willow trees. Soil erosion can also play a role in root exposure. Significant rainfall will wash away soil, or windy conditions may blow it away. Additionally, roots require oxygen to keep a tree healthy. When soil gets compacted or the space around a tree doesn’t allow for root expansion down into the ground, roots will start to spread along the surface and grow out of the soil in search of oxygen. 

What Should You Do About Surfaced Tree Roots?

Your first instinct may be to cut the roots after they’ve surfaced; however, this can cause serious damage to the tree. It will become more susceptible to pests, diseases, rotting, and even death, resulting in the need for tree removal. You also want to avoid paving over exposed roots or trying to disguise them under a new plant bed. Both actions can compromise the health of the tree by restricting access to oxygen and water.

Instead, it’s better to place several inches of mulch around the tree to improve soil conditions and provide adequate nutrients to the roots. Be sure the mulch is kept at least an inch away from the base of the trunk. You can also fill in areas where soil erosion has occurred. This is usually done by putting down a layer of topsoil and compost mixture and sowing it with grass seed.
