Whether it's for a quick overnight or a long-term stay, a hotel is your home away from home. That doesn't mean, however, that you'll always sleep as well as you would in your own bed. Here are some ways to ensure a restful night's sleep when staying at a hotel.

3 Tips for Sleeping Comfortably at a Hotel

1. Adjust the Temperature

The temperature of the room plays an important role in the quality of sleep a person gets. Studies show that maintaining a room temperature between 60 and 67 degrees Fahrenheit helps encourage and stabilize REM sleep. REM is the stage of sleep people need for deep rest; it also plays vital roles in dreaming, memory, processing emotions, and brain development. So, before heading to bed, set the thermostat anywhere between 60 and 67 degrees.

2. Ask for Comfortable Bedding

As you settle into the room, check the pillows and blankets, and request more if you need them. Most hotels stock plenty of extras and are happy to oblige. Some folks like to bring a pillow from home when traveling, as this comes with feelings of familiarity and comfort and can make it easier to get a good night's sleep.

Also, check the light in the room. If you need total darkness to sleep, bring along a few clothespins to keep the break in the curtains shut. A towel can be placed along the bottom of the door to minimize hallway light.

3. Turn Off Electronics

Whether you're working, scrolling the internet, or streaming a video, taking your electronic device to bed can hinder quality sleep. The blue light generated by these devices has been shown to interfere with the production of melatonin, the hormone responsible for healthy sleep-wake cycles. Aim to shut off all electronic devices at least 30 minutes before you plan to go to bed.
