There's nothing like a nice swim in the summer, especially when you're on vacation and traveling. Booking a hotel, tuning everything out, and just enjoying the feel of the water can be so restorative. Even just lounging around the pool goes a long way. However, that's only possible when everyone plays by the rules and respects the usual hotel pool etiquette. If it's been a long time since you've been on summer vacation, here's what you need to know.

Do

Respect other guests.

All the other guests at the hotel have just as much of a right to a peaceful hotel stay as you do. Be mindful of your conversations and behavior when you're at the pool. For example, if you need to take a phone call that might require you to be louder than usual or share confidential information, consider leaving the area for a bit. Or, if you're staying with someone else or a group of people and having fun in the pool, try not to splash others who aren't in your group.

Watch your children.

Similarly, if you have children, please keep an eye on them. It's for their own safety and out of respect for other guests. It's not the responsibility of any staff member to parent curious or rowdy kids. If you want a time when there will be fewer guests around, aim for early morning or late afternoon; most adults on vacation will be waking up and staying out much later.

Don't

Reserve chairs if you won't be around.

If you can find and snag good seating around a hotel pool, by all means, put down your towel or sunhat when you're taking a dip. However, if you don't intend to be there for quite a while, make it available for someone else. If you won't be poolside until well after breakfast or lunch, then hold onto those items. Some hotels even have a time limit on how long chairs can be reserved like this, so be sure to check, or else you make come back to find your things missing and at the desk.

Prevent the lifeguard from doing their job.

A lifeguard's job is to ensure people are safe and to intervene if there's a problem in the water. They aren't there to help people take photos, recommend nearby restaurants, or answer questions about the hotel. Thankfully, there are staff members who would be more than happy to help with those things! Unless, for whatever reason, you see something they have yet to notice, steer clear of them so they can work.
