Surfing is a popular ocean sport that is accessible at just about any age. If you plan to visit Maui and want a memorable experience riding the waves, you can begin with surf lessons. You can pick up on fundamentals much faster and build a solid technique with professional guidance of an instructor. To prepare for your first class, follow the tips below.

How to Get Ready for Your First Surfing Lesson

1. Wear the Right Clothes

Being comfortable during the lesson will keep you from getting distracted. Start by taking off bracelets, necklaces, earrings, and rings. These can get dislodged by powerful waves and get in the way or even lost to the ocean. Show up with swimwear that fits comfortably and securely to ensure you’re ready to get into the water. You can also wear these items under a wet suit during the surf lesson.

2. Eat a Healthy Meal

Paddling, swimming, popping up, and other surfing motions burn many calories. Because the body needs plenty of energy to participate in the activity, eat a healthy meal before the lesson.

Drinking plenty of water ensures you remain hydrated, and light, protein-rich foods will support the muscles. Nuts, a peanut butter and jelly sandwich, or a protein shake can prevent cramping and give the body energy. Eating 60 minutes before your lesson gives you time to digest the meal.

3. Gather Essentials

When arriving at the class, ensure you have everything you need. Surfing is a serious workout, so bring plenty of water to stay hydrated. Additionally, bring a towel so you can comfortably dry off after your post shower rinse. Thank the surf lesson instructor for their time by leaving a cash tip.

Having sunblock on hand will help protect your skin, as you spend plenty of time under the sun during a lesson. However, check that the product doesn’t contain oxybenzone and octinoxate. These are banned in Hawaii because they harm sea life. It is best to apply the sunscreen before the lesson begins to allow it enough time to set in before getting in the water. You will also want to focus on the areas such as your face and back of your body as these areas get the most exposure to sun during surfing. Too much sunscreen on your front side can make you slippery on the board which is not ideal for beginner surfers.
