1. Know the Trailer's Limits

Before loading, check the trailer's capacity. Confirm the gross vehicle weight rating to determine how much weight the fully loaded truck can carry, as well as the gross trailer weight rating, which is the maximum combined weight of the trailer and cargo that can be accommodated. You should also look at the gross axle weight rating, which determines how much weight a single axle can carry.

2. Park on a Level Surface and Stabilize the Trailer

When loading or unloading, always park the vehicle on a flat, firm surface. An uneven surface can make it difficult to distribute the weight properly. For added stability, use stabilizers on the vehicle's rear wheels. If you don't have stabilizers, you can use blocks. Place them at the trailer's rear so that the cargo's weight doesn't tip up the front of the trailer during loading.

3. Load Heavy Items First

To reduce trailer sway while driving, distribute the cargo weight so that 60% of the weight is in front of the axle and 40% is behind it. Load heavier items first, placing them slightly ahead of the axle. You can then add lighter items around the heavy goods. 

Continue to use smaller goods to fill in any gaps. The aim is to keep the trailer's center of gravity low to minimize side-to-side movement on the road.

4. Strap It In

Use straps to help keep your cargo secure. Instead of waiting until the very end to implement straps, start using them as soon as you've loaded some heavier goods before adding smaller items. Ratchet straps are ideal for oversized goods. You can also use the trailer's tie-down anchors or rope.
