Swimming pools are an attractive spot for pests because they provide a reliable water supply. There’s also often foliage and a variety of other pests to eat. Dead bugs can become an eyesore on the surface of your pool and require more extensive cleanings. There are, luckily, many easy ways to keep pests away. Try the following methods so your pool continues to look great.

How to Keep Pests Away From Your Swimming Pool

1. Take Care of Landscaping

Lush landscaping may look great around your pool, but it’s also going to draw pests in. Tall grasses can become a breeding spot and also give pests a place to hide from birds and other predators. Mow the grass around your pool once a week and create a clean barrier between your pool and foliage. Aside from preventing pests, this will also keep leaves from drifting into the pool and clogging the filters, which can create water flow problems.

2. Install a Bug Mister

Bug misters are installed near the pool and spray a fine mist of bug repellant into the air. These insecticides drive away mosquitos, water boatmen, backswimmers, and other common swimming pool pests. Insects are most active at dawn and dusk, so purchase a mister system with a timer. You can then program it to spray at these times.

3. Apply Larvicide

If you’re already dealing with a serious bug problem, apply larvicide to the water and swimming pool area. Mosquitos, especially, use your swimming pool as a breeding ground. Larvicide contains compounds that disrupt insect larvae growth cycles, ensuring that pests don’t mature into more mosquitos. They come in liquids, tablets, and other forms appropriate for swimming pools and surrounding areas.
