Dental implants remain the only permanent tooth restoration option. They look, feel, and function like real teeth without the risk of decay. If you recently underwent surgery for these implants or will soon, knowing what to do after the procedure is key to a healthy smile. Take a look at how to care for your dental implants.

What to Know About Dental Implant Aftercare

1. Avoid Hot Foods and Beverages

Site tenderness is normal following dental implant surgery once the anesthesia wears off. Avoid hot foods and beverages and sugary and spicy food to prevent irritating sensitive gum tissue. Instead, focus on soft foods that won’t stress your mouth, such as pureed fruits, yogurt, and steamed vegetables that have had time to cool.

2. Use a Soft-Bristled Toothbrush

Medium- and hard-bristled toothbrushes stress tender gum tissue, increasing the risk of swelling, bleeding, redness, and pain. They also scratch your dental implants and contribute to enamel erosion on natural teeth.

Brush your teeth with a soft-bristled brush to prevent these problems, but wait a few days to brush the implants to avoid site irritation. Use an antiseptic mouthwash to kill bacteria and flush out food particles until your dentist says it's okay to brush.

3. Reduce Site Swelling With Ice Packs

Ice packs reduce site pain and swelling. Wrap an ice pack in a hand towel and apply it on the affected area for 15 to 20 minutes, then take a 15 to 20-minute break before applying the pack again. Continue this for up to 72 hours after your procedure, with moist heat recommended thereafter to reduce any remaining swelling.

4. Control Bleeding With Gauze and Tea Bags

Implant site bleeding is normal for the first three days after the surgery, which you can control with gauze. Gently bite down on the gauze for about an hour to stop the bleeding, then repeat as needed every six to 12 hours. You can also carefully bite down on a black tea bag, as the tannins in the tea contract the blood vessels to mitigate bleeding.
