Marble countertops and floors are elegant and durable, making them popular for kitchen remodeling. However, if marble isn't well-cleaned, it can lose its glossy sheen and look dirty and worn. This is especially true for floors, which are subject to harsh wear and tear every day. Thankfully, proper maintenance will keep your floors looking their best and extend their lifespan. Here's what you should know.

How to Care for Marble Floors

1. Remove Dry Dirt

Use a dry microfiber mop to remove dirt, dust, hair, and pollen from marble floors. If you want to vacuum, make sure to use a setting and attachment designed for hard floors. For example, don't use a hard-bristled vacuum attachment that's designed for carpeting, since it can scratch the marble. Also, make sure your vacuum cleaner has rubberized wheels that won't scuff or scratch the floor, and don't apply too much pressure when vacuuming. Do this two to three times per week.

2. Follow Up With a Damp Clean

Once you've removed grit and grime, you can give your marble floors a wet cleaning using a soft mop, a pH-neutral soap, and hot water. You'll want to avoid acidic cleaners since marble is highly porous, and acids can eat into the stone, causing discoloration. After mopping, you should rinse the floor and dry it with a soft towel or cloth. Marble floors benefit from wet cleaning once per week.

3. Address Spills As They Happen

Besides taking the above cleaning steps, you also want to address spills promptly. Since marble is porous, liquids can set and cause stains quickly. You can use a damp microfiber cloth to blot up the spill gently. Try not to rub it into the floor, or you risk creating a stain. Then, follow up with a damp cleaning as described above. For scuff marks, you can simply use a piece of felt to rub them away. A tennis ball will do if you don't have a felt pad.
