Dentures are an affordable way to replace several teeth, helping you maintain a beautiful smile. Even though dentures aren’t the same as real teeth, they still require consistent care to maintain good oral health. Here are some important practices you should follow.

3 Ways to Care for Dentures

1. Brush and Rinse Regularly

You should brush your dentures with a soft-bristled toothbrush at least twice a day to remove food debris and prevent plaque buildup. However, you should not use toothpaste, which can be too abrasive and may scratch the teeth. Rinse the dentures with water and gently scrub with a brush. Consistently cleaning them will reduce your risk of gum disease and keep your breath smelling fresh.

2. Avoid Hot Water Exposure

You should never expose dentures to liquids that are hotter than room temperature. This can actually warp the artificial teeth, causing them to no longer fit your mouth properly. When soaking them overnight or rinsing them with water or a denture cleanser, only use warm or cool water.

3. Keep Up With Dental Appointments

Visiting the dentist remains just as important when you wear dentures. Similar to a regular teeth cleaning, you should schedule an appointment every six months so your dentist can check for issues with your teeth, as well as the health of your gums. If they start to feel uncomfortable, no longer fit properly, or are contributing to mouth sores or other issues, contact your dentist right away so they can determine if repairs or a replacement are needed.
