Your child needs regular visits to a dentist to maintain good oral health.  These visits are useful for several reasons.  Getting regular teeth cleanings will prevent cavities.  And the dentist will monitor  the baby teeth as well as the  growth of the adult teeth and address any concerns that could affect your child's developing jaw structure.  But not knowing what to expect might cause your child to feel apprehensive about going to their dental appointments. Here are a few strategies to help make your youngster more comfortable with the idea.

3 Tips to Help Your Child Feel More Comfortable During Dental Checkups

1. Stress Why Good Oral Hygiene Matters

Let your child know that regular dental appointments will keep their teeth and gums healthy as they get older. Stress that the dentist will thoroughly clean their teeth to get rid of residue that wasn't removed during daily brushing and flossing. This will prevent cavities, so your youngster can still eat their favorite foods without feeling pain when they chew and will be able to speak without difficulty.

2. Arrange a Meet and Great

Fear of the unknown is what makes many children nervous about going to dental checkups.

If possible, visit the dentist's office before the scheduled oral exam and cleaning. During the visit, your child can meet the dentist and dental hygienists, see the exam room, and ask questions. When it's time for the actual appointment, your child will already be familiar with the setting and people, which could help put their fears aside.

3. Play Pretend

Imaginative play can further help your child overcome their fears of the dentist. They can use their toys to explore what happens during a dental exam. They can roleplay as the dentist, for instance, and pretend to brush the teeth on a doll or stuffed animal. You can also purchase toy dentist kits that include cleaning tools to familiarize your youngster with the instruments used during routine exams.
