Having your own private swimming pool gives you a ready source of fun, exercise, and relaxation. But when building your dream pool, it's important to know what to do—and what not to do—to ensure your design goals are met. Here are a few do's and don'ts to keep in mind during the planning process.

Do:

Acquire multiple estimates.

Estimates give you a rough idea of what pool construction will ultimately cost. But if you only get one estimate, you won't know if that builder is offering the best deal. So, aim to obtain at least three or four estimates; this way, you can compare prices, services, and terms and make a more informed decision about which builder is best able to meet your needs and stay within the projected budget.

The only way a builder can provide exactly what you envision is for you to be a proactive part of the planning process. Be clear about what you want in terms of pool size, shape, location, and amenities, such as LED lighting, a swim-up bar, or a water feature like a waterfall or spillway. The installer can then custom design the perfect pool.

Don't:

Choose aesthetics over safety.

Yes, a swimming pool should be a visually appealing place—but that appeal shouldn't come at the expense of safety. Some features, like a tumbling waterfall or a zero-depth slope, can certainly be elegant, yet they also come with dangers, especially if you have young children in the home or plan to hold frequent pool parties. Also, incorporate safety into the overall design, such as a pool fence—Florida law requires them to be at least four feet high—and an alarm system.

Forget to plan accordingly.

A new pool is a major project. It often takes two to three months to complete, and that means you can expect at least some disruption to your normal life and routine. This is especially important to remember if you have young children or pets or you work from home. Keep tabs on kids and critters at all times, and consider an alternative work environment until the project is complete.
