Are you hearing chirping from inside your chimney? Concerned you may have bats? It might now be as bad as you think, you may have birds instead!

Chimney swifts are a fascinating bird species. Their preferred nesting sites are hollow trees, but due to loss of habitat they are often found in chimneys of residential homes!
They build saucer shaped nests and glue then to the side of the chimney using their glue like saliva. They lay 3-5 eggs and the nestlings stay in the nest for 3-4 weeks. They are very loud. Their distinctive chatter can be heard whenever the parent birds bring them food or if the nest is disturbed.

Chimney swifts are not like other birds. They can only land on vertical surfaces like upright trees or the inside of a chimney. They cannot perch on tree branches like other birds. Because of this quirk they live most of their lives in the air catching bugs and eating on the go!

So you have Chimney Swifts, whats next?

Chimney Swifts are a Threatened Species and protected by the migratory bird act. These statuses mean we cannot disturb them and they must be left alone until the young vacate the nest. Luckily they aren't dangerous and don't spread any disease. The best thing to do is tolerate their chattering and leave them alone until the fledglings have left the nest. Once they are gone a wildlife proof chimney cap can be installed.
